Granite countertops characteristics

A granite countertop is a worktop cut and polished from hard igneous granite, an extremely dense natural stone of interlocking quartz and feldspar. Egyptian granite offers a wide colour range, from grey and silver-grey to red, pink and near-black, each slab carrying its own crystal pattern. The stone’s hardness and low porosity make countertops highly resistant to scratches, heat and daily wear, which is why granite remains the premium choice for working kitchen surfaces.

Product Information

Properties and finishes of granite countertops

Granite countertops sit at roughly 6 to 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, so knives, pans and abrasive cleaning rarely mark the surface. The dense crystalline body resists heat and, once sealed, shrugs off stains from oil, wine and citrus. We finish countertops in a high-gloss polished surface that deepens the colour, a smooth matte honed finish, or a textured flamed surface for a more rustic look. Edges are profiled to your spec, and every top is part of our wider Egyptian granite programme of slabs, tiles and cut-to-size.

Suitability & Installation

Where to use granite countertops

Kitchen worktops and islands

Granite is the benchmark surface for kitchen counters and islands, standing up to chopping, hot pans and constant cleaning while keeping a luxurious polished finish for years.

Bathroom vanities

Polished granite vanity tops resist water, soaps and cosmetics, giving bathrooms a durable, easy-clean surface with a high-end look.

Bars, reception and commercial counters

Hotels, restaurants and offices use granite for bar tops and reception desks where heavy use demands a hard, scratch-resistant stone.

Granite countertops: frequently asked questions

Do granite countertops need sealing?
Yes, a periodic sealer is recommended. Granite is dense but slightly porous, so a quality sealer keeps the worktop fully stain-resistant against oil, wine and citrus. With sealing every year or two, an Egyptian granite countertop stays easy to clean for decades.

Can you put hot pans on granite?
Granite is highly heat-resistant and a hot pan will not melt or scorch it, though using trivets is still good practice to protect the sealer and avoid thermal shock from extreme temperature changes.

What thickness are granite worktops?
Standard granite countertops are supplied at 2 cm or 3 cm thickness. CIDG Egypt cuts tops to your kitchen drawings with finished edges and ships them factory-direct worldwide.
