Granite setts characteristics
Granite setts are small, roughly cubic blocks of hard igneous granite used as a paving unit. Egyptian granite ranges from grey and silver-grey to warm red and pink tones, all of it dense, low-porosity rock formed from interlocking quartz and feldspar crystals. That mineral structure gives setts exceptional compressive strength and abrasion resistance, so they carry vehicle traffic and foot traffic for decades while keeping their colour and a textured, grippy surface in wet weather.
Product Information
Properties and finishes of granite setts
Granite setts rate around 6 to 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, which is why they shrug off scratching, frost and de-icing salts. The split-face top gives natural slip resistance, while the dense body resists staining from oil and tyre marks. We supply setts in several finishes: a riven or split natural face for maximum grip, flamed (thermal) tops for a uniform rugged texture, honed for a smoother matte look, and polished where a refined accent band is wanted. Setts pair perfectly with our wider Egyptian granite range for kerbs, edging and matching slabs.
Suitability & Installation
Where to use granite setts
Driveways and parking areas
Cubic granite setts handle the point loads of cars and light vehicles without cracking, making them a premium, long-life surface for residential driveways and parking courts.
Outdoor paving and pedestrian streets
Setts are ideal for plazas, courtyards, garden paths and town-centre paving, where their textured surface and tight joints create durable, attractive walking surfaces.
Edging, kerbs and feature bands
Smaller setts work as decorative borders, tree surrounds and contrasting bands within larger paved areas.
Landscape and heritage projects
Their classic look suits restoration, hotel grounds and resort landscaping that need a timeless cobbled finish.

Granite setts: frequently asked questions
What sizes do granite setts come in?
Our standard granite setts are supplied as cubes and rectangular blocks, commonly 10x10 cm and 10x20 cm on the face with depths from 5 cm to 10 cm. We also cut custom sizes to match driveway and paving designs.
Are granite setts slippery when wet?
No. The split or flamed top surface of Egyptian granite setts stays grippy in rain, which is why they are widely used for driveways, ramps and pedestrian streets that must stay safe in wet conditions.
Can you export granite setts from Egypt?
Yes. CIDG Egypt ships factory-direct setts worldwide in crates and containers, with CE and SGS certification, to clients across the Gulf, Europe and Africa.
